Hawks’ switch seals upset

- LACHIE YOUNG

DRYSDALE has caused an upset in BFL netball, coming from behind to overrun Modewarre and claim a muchneeded three-goal victory.

The Hawks were down by 10 goals during the first quarter but rallied to be level by the final break, before putting the foot down to win 41-38.

A change in position for Georgia Berry worked wonders for Drysdale coach Olivia Wilson, who said it was pleasing to score such an important four points after a slow start.

“We didn’t have a great start, it was a rushed warm-up, and the girls just weren’t quite ready at the start,” Wilson said.

“We were down by 10 within the first quarter and pegged it back and then the second quarter we did better after a couple of changes.

“The third quarter we made the drastic change of putting Georgia from defence into goals and that really worked for us. So it was good to get the win having come back from so far down.”

The result puts Drysdale within two points of the Warriors on the ladder and elevates its hopes of playing finals later in the year.

Wilson said the Hawks had been slow starters this season but were now beginning to find their groove.

“We had a rough patch at the start of the year, coming off not playing last season and me being away for the majority of the lead up to the season,” she said.

“So it took us a while to jell, but Saturday was pretty much a must-win for us to be looking towards finals.”

In other BFL matches Barwon Heads defeated Portarlington 48-29, Torquay got up over Queenscliff 53-39, Anglesea fell to Ocean Grove 61-32,

and Newcomb was no match for Geelong Amateur, going down 94-24.
