Geelong win is all glass

Rebounding the key

- BETH DAVIS

REBOUNDING proved the key in the Geelong Supercats’ 90-66 win over the Melbourne Tigers on Saturday.

The home team out-rebounded the visitors 56-27, with Ma’alo Hicks registering a massive 17-rebound haul.

Coach Justin Schueller said rebounding was a key focus for the team after the loss against Waverley the previous weekend.

“A big reason we lost the Waverley game was that we missed out on rebounding opportunities,” Schueller said.

“Ma’alo was just outstanding (against the Tigers), to see him attack the glass the way that he did.”

A scrappy start to the first quarter saw a back-and-forth contest before Geelong managed to take an eight-point lead at the first break, which the Tigers were never able to chase down.

Proving the depth of its roster this season, the Supercats found a way to win without leading scorer Isaac Turner, who was rested after tweaking his back against Waverley.

Schueller knows that a deep roster is what it’s going to take to win the championship this year.

“We need depth of talent and not just to rely on one or two players,” he said.

“It was good to see someone like Jack Terrill get a good opportunity tonight. That’s a guy that’s working hard every week on the practice court.

“We want to be able to put anyone in the game and feel confident it doesn’t change our course too much.”

All Supercats players managed to get some points on the board, with Gabriel Hadley leading all scorers with 23 points to go with five rebounds, and Jack Macdonald adding 21 points to his six rebounds and six assists.

The Supercats will return to the Geelong Arena this Saturday when they host the Frankston Blues.
