EVERY PLAYER RATED

(Geelong) FIRST PRELIMINARY FINAL, MELBOURNE v GEELONG

- RATINGS BY CHRIS CAVANAGH (Melbourne) & LACHIE YOUNG

CHRISTIAN SALEM

8.5 HIS ball use off halfback was as sharp as his haircut. Unlucky not to be AllAustralian this year, but it doesn’t matter now.

STEVEN MAY

3 THE Demons’ General down back, his voice was as important as his actions. Finished on ice but hopefully not for the year.

JAKE LEVER

PULLS the right lever almost every time down back. Marking game was down, but helped keep Cameron quiet as a mouse.

JAKE BOWEY

ONE of just two teenagers in the Demons team, the sixgamer looked as composed as anyone across half-back.

HARRISON PETTY

DIDN’T see a lot of it down back, but neither did his opponents. Faultless after letting Cameron get over the back and kick the first goal.

TRENT RIVERS

GAVE away a clumsy free kick that resulted in a Gryan Miers goal in the second quarter and his night didn’t get a lot better.

TOM SPARROW

WORKED hard but didn’t see a lot of it across halfforward.

3

6 Still, kicked a goal so gets a tick.

ED LANGDON

6.5 PLAYED his usual role on the wing nicely enough. Has one serious running tank.

BAYLEY FRITSCH

6.5 A HERO of the qualifying final against Brisbane with four goals, he didn’t quite reach those heights again.

7 TOM McDONALD

6 COMICALLY kicked into the man on the mark with his first shot on goal, but his night got better.

JACK VINEY

WANTED the ball more than any of the Cats’ midfielders. As hard-at-it an onballer as they come.

ALEX NEAL-BULLEN

8

6 PRESSURE and tackling is a highlight as shown by his desperate chase on Dangerfield early on.

BEN BROWN

8 The man with the Sideshow Bob hair was a main event in the Dees forward line. Had hands like a vice against Blicavs.

CHARLIE SPARGO

7.5

The definition of an opportunist. Didn’t get a lot of the footy, but made the most of it when he did.

MAX GAWN 10

The former pizza delivery driver looks like giving Demons fans a flag. Third quarter was one for the ages.

CLAYTON OLIVER 9 PLAYED second fiddle in midfield, but still a super game. Far too quick on the spread for Selwood.

ANGUS BRAYSHAW 7 MADE sure his side was well protected on the outside of the contest.

JAMES HARMES 6.5 STARTED on bench but helped get the party started in the first quarter.

LUKE JACKSON 6 NO toothless tiger when he rotates with Gawn in the ruck. Serious athlete.

MICHAEL HIBBERD 5 GOT a fresh lease on football life with a call-up for the injured Joel Smith, but had a relatively quiet night.

KYSAIAH PICKETT

CYRIL Rioli-like impact when you consider his disposals to scores ratio in a difficult role. A serious excitement machine.

JAMES JORDAN 3

CAME on for May as medical substitute, but the game was over by then.
