Local Libs get promoted

Guy has new roles for Riordan and McArthur

-

STATE Liberal leader Matthew Guy has given promotions to Colac’s Richard Riordan and Geelong-based MP Bev McArthur among other loyalists rewarded for helping him dispose of Michael O’Brien last week.

Mr Riordan, the Polwarth MP, is now the opposition spokesman for local government and for resources, while the Upper House’s Ms McArthur

was made an assistant to James Newbury, whose role is scrutiny of government.

Former health Minister David Davis has been made shadow treasurer and given the portfolio of Melbourne’s CBD (Covid) recovery.

Other backers were also handed prized portfolios, including Tim Smith, who was promoted to the role of shadow attorney-general.

It is understood former leader Mr O’Brien, who was toppled in last week’s leadership spill, refused a senior portfolio on the frontbench.

A number of parliamentarians retained their portfolios in the shake-up, including Georgie Crozier, who will remain as opposition spokeswoman on health and ambulance services.

High-profile omissions included Edward O’Donohue, who flagged his intention to retire from parliament on Saturday.

Brad Rowswell, the youngest member of the Liberal Party room, was also dumped from the frontbench.

Dismissing suggestions he was rewarding loyalists, Mr Guy said the selection of his shadow cabinet was “entirely” merit based.

When asked about Mr Rowswell’s departure, Mr Guy said: “Brad is an awesome guy … It’s not to say he won’t come back”.

“I can’t fit everyone in. There’s only limited numbers and you just have to make that choice.”
