Everist beauty piques interest

- NICOLE MAYNE

AN original mid-century home designed by celebrated architect Neil Everist has sparked a huge wave of interest from devotees of the modernist style.

Newtown agent Jason Barnett was inundated with inquiries within a day of listing the four-bedroom house at 7 Tiverton St, Belmont.

The long-held family home is a mid-century time capsule showcasing floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed timber beams and a feature open fireplace in the living room.

Late Geelong architect Everist, who died in 2016, brought his signature modernist style to the modest residential project.

The award-winning partner in architectural firm McGlashan, Everist was best known for overseeing the transformation of Geelong’s Dennys Lascelles woolstores into Deakin University’s waterfront campus and designing Heide II for John and Sunday Reid.

Mr Barnett said potential buyers from both Geelong and Melbourne were lining up to inspect the house ahead of its November 13 auction.

Price hopes are $720,000 to $770,000.

“There has been a lot of inquiries from the minute it went up,” Mr Barnett said.

“That mid-century style is really popular at the moment, it’s really on trend, so that is grabbing the attention, and the fact it’s in Belmont.

“It’s got a big high fence so it doesn’t look like much from the street and it’s got trees all around it but once you get inside it’s cool.

“It’s got these huge windows to the north … it’s got a great feel inside.”

The U-shaped house was ahead of its time with a main open-plan living room incorporating a wall of glazing framing garden views.

Cork floors feature in the kitchen and dining area, which steps up to a carpeted loungeroom where the open fireplace with built-in wood compartment is the centrepiece.

The flexible floorplan also includes a separate dining room or study with polished timber floors, a second living area that has served as a fourth bedroom and an updated bathroom. with a corner spa.

Mr Barnett said there was lots of scope to add fresh touches, such as a new kitchen, and landscaping.

The corner property also has access to a double garage and carport off Brocka Ave.

Another Everist-designed house at 13-17 Vaness Ave, Highton will be auctioned on Saturday.

Barry Plant, Highton agent Kieron Hunter has set a price of $1.35m-$1.45m for the single-level 1970s home with four bedrooms, three living areas and two bathrooms.

It’s set on a 2043sq m block with a swimming pool and landscaped gardens.
