Storms cause CBD flooding

- JACOB GRAMS

A SERIES of thunderstorms rattled through the Geelong region on Friday, dropping hail in some parts and causing flash flooding chaos in the city.

Hailstones more than 1cm in diameter showered down on the city and inner suburbs around 7pm as an unstable atmosphere let loose.

The storm also caused flash flooding on CBD streets and at businesses, including inside city eatery Mexican Graffiti.

More storms rolled through during the evening, adding more rain to one of the wettest Octobers in the past decade for the region. Geelong has now had more than 70mm of rain for the month at the city’s Breakwater gauge, which recorded 80mm last year.

The city could yet eclipse that mark – the highest recorded for October since the station opened in 2011 – with more rain predicted over the next week.

Unsettled weather is set to linger in the region over the weekend, with 2-8mm predicted during Saturday.

The threat of rain will diminish over the weekend, before clearing and warming to a top of 28C by Wednesday.
