Justine’s fiance ‘forgives’

- TIFFANY BAKKER

A FORMER Minneapolis police officer was sentenced to 57 months in prison on Thursday for the fatal shooting of Australian woman Justine Damond, who had called emergency services to report a crime.

Mohamed Noor, 36, was convicted in 2019 of thirddegree murder and seconddegree manslaughter in the 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond in a case that sparked outrage in Australia.

“I still cry so often and I miss her so deeply. I will always love her,” Don Damond, the slain woman’s fiance, told the court via teleconference.

Damond said Justine (pictured) would have shown mercy towards her killer. “I have no doubt she would have forgiven you, Mohamed, for your inability to manage your own emotions that night,” he said.

Noor spoke briefly in court and apologised again for his deadly action four years ago.

“I’m deeply grateful for Mr Damond’s forgiveness,” the former policeman said. “I’m deeply sorry for the pain that I’ve caused that family.”
