Making mark further north

-

MARK Schmetzer made his name winning Highway races for country horses in Sydney, now the Sconebased trainer is testing the waters in Brisbane with the help of his brother.

Schmetzer (pictured) has sent two horses to the Sunshine State on a factfinding mission under the care of his brother Troy, who has teamed up with Coast trainer Adam Campton.

With four wins from five starts, Winside is a horse on the up and while Schmetzer has Kosciuszko dreams in 12 months, he wants to see how she performs under metropolitan pressure in the Benchmark 72 Handicap (1050m) at Doomben.

“I don’t really know what kind of class of horse I need up there yet so I am still trying to work that out,” Schmetzer said. Rated a $4.80 chance with TAB, Winside has settled in well on the Gold Coast. Schmetzer also has Kateru in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1350m), who he said was huge value at his $71 quote should they not elect to go to Ipswich on Wednesday instead.
