Flapper dazzles Drysdale to set up Grove victory

- TOBY PRIME

OCEAN Grove coach Matt Flapper was on “another level” in his exhibition against Drysdale on Saturday in an eye-watering 32-5 rink win.

The margin was one of the biggest in recent memory and helped Ocean Grove to a 83-65 victory before this weekend’s top-of-thetable clash against Eastern Park.

Lead Craig Rippon said Flapper’s display was one of the biggest margins he could recall in recent years.

“A couple of years ago we had some big wins, but obviously in Premier league you don’t expect to win by margins like that,” Rippon said. “Matt was at another level.”

“He’s pretty consistent all the time, obviously the quality player he is. He’s well known with all his Australian, Commonwealth Games and his Victorian representative stuff.

“He’s just a quality player – he’s the best player going around in the Geelong region.”

The performance helped Ocean Grove to a 5-0 start before the round 6 contest against ladderleader Eastern Park.

Skip Brad Pavey led his rink to a 20-16 victory but Drysdale skips John Fry and Ashley Rees claimed the other two rinks.

Rippon said his rink had started the season strongly but there was still room for improvement.

“We haven’t lost a game in five at the moment so the rink’s jelling together pretty well and if we can give Matt an opportunity to play the game he plays, the numbers come,” he said.

“We’re lucky we’ve got a pretty strong side at the moment and the club’s going really well right across the board.”

In other matches, Queenscliff took maximum points against City of Geelong with an 82-59 win, Lara and Belmont could not be separated at 83 each, Eastern Park prevailed 75-67 over Bell Post Hill and Highton dominated Bareena 101-70 to take home all 18 points.
