VIVA HAS BEEN OPEN AND HONEST ON TERMINAL

IN response to “Terminal project should be transparent” (GA, 8/3), it is important the people of Geelong understand the facts about Viva Energy’s proposed gas terminal.

Viva Energy has done all it can to be open and transparent in assessing potential emissions from the proposed terminal, and we have made the results of environmental studies available to everyone via our website.

We have engaged with the community through regular information sessions, where we have answered people’s questions and listened to their concerns.

In the interests of full transparency, the estimated emissions from transportation of LNG were included in our review and are available online in the environment effects statement appendix. Under the EES process, Viva Energy was only required to provide an assessment of direct and indirect emissions from construction and operation of the terminal. Other emissions, such as transportation emissions, are outside the scope of this project.

Our proposed project is a terminal operation only and that means users of the terminal – not Viva Energy – would source and deliver the gas and are responsible for the scope 3 emissions those activities generate.

Karen L. referred to AGL’s terminal proposal, but that terminal was purely for AGL’s

I HAVE read the stories (GA, 7/2) about the concerts of the Foo Fighters and Midnight Oil in Geelong recently. It proved that Geelong is capable of putting on great concerts by well-known bands. So now GMHBA Stadium has had a well-known band performing there, why doesn’t it have plenty more concerts with well-known bands? There should be a music event for Geelongbased bands, both male and female musicians, as well. Plus have an interactive link to bands playing, so fans at the event can interact with the event. Maybe an event similar to the Big Day Out but at GMHBA Stadium and around Kardinia Park grounds as well. Another great idea would be to have live music or acoustic music at the Kardinia Park pool in the warmer weather. own operations, and so AGL would have been responsible for sourcing and shipping the gas, and all associated emissions.

Viva Energy has approached the gas terminal project with a sustainability lens throughout and worked to minimise emissions at every stage.

Further, we are committed to offset all the direct and indirect carbon emissions (scope 1 and scope 2) from construction and operation of the terminal.

Alongside our plans to establish a New Energies Service Station and a solar farm at the Geelong Energy Hub, the proposed gas import terminal is part of Viva Energy’s vision to provide fuel and energy security for Victoria while supporting the transition to renewable energy.
