ON THE CRUEL ROAD TO DUCK SHOOTING

-

OH, Paul Brown (GA, 29/4), how naive do you think we are?

Can you honestly claim, much less believe, that the road repairs work by the Field & Game is to help bird-watchers and canoeists get easier access into the Reedy Lake/Lake Connewarre complex?

Its purpose could be best described as two-fold. One is to hope it raises the profile of the Field & Game as a body interested in helping out with purely altruistic intent. It hopes to raise the association’s profile as one with public interest at heart.

The other is, of course, to give better access to the wetlands for its members.

But no amount of heavy machinery or shovels on the ground can compensate for, or justify, the cruelty inherent in duck shooting.

It has been shown time and time again that the hunting of native water birds involves cruelty – it is inevitable.

Does some road work justify this cruelty? Of course it does not.
