No Ruby, no worries for Ammos

- MATTHEW FORREST

DOWN a key player and scrambling for new combinations did not ultimately hurt Geelong Amateur as it powered to a 49-32 win away against Queenscliff.

Star Ammos goal shooter Ruby Watson missed Saturday’s clash, with coach Riley Richardson left to find a new avenue to goal.

But Richardson said he was pleased with how his players worked together in Watson’s absence, despite being undersized.

“Ruby’s a linchpin in our front line, but it was great to be able to try some different combinations and see how they went,” he said. “Georgia Duncan moved from goal attack to goal shooter, and she stood up really well, and gave us great opportunities.

“We knew we’d have to be a little bit more patient with the ball with Ruby out, but the girls responded really well and we managed to have a positive score every quarter, which I was really happy with.”

OCEAN GROVE v DRYSDALE

OCEAN Grove shooter Rebecca O’Neill scored 38 goals to lead her side to a 31goal victory over Drysdale. The Hawks extended their lead in every quarter to secure a comfortable 55-24 win, with Grubber Ashton O’Brien (17 goals) best-on-court.

ANGLESEA v PORTARLINGTON

A DOMINANT lastquarter effort helped deliver Anglesea a hardfought 11-goal win over Portarlington. The home side trailed at quartertime and halftime, before taking a slender two-goal advantage into the final break and extending it in the last term to run out a 39-28 winner. Anglesea goal shooter Bree Caldwell was named best-oncourt with 22 goals.

BARWON HEADS v NEWCOMB

NEWCOMB caused an upset on the road, defeating Barwon Heads by five goals, 38-33. Goal shooter Laney Mcfayden (34 goals) was named best-oncourt in a dominant performance that helped carry Newcomb over the line.

TORQUAY v MODEWARRE

TORQUAY proved too strong at home for Modewarre in a 48-33 victory. The Tigers led at every break on the way to the 15-goal win, with Elisa Hall leading the attack for Torquay with 31 goals.
