It was such gutsy win for our girls: Woolley

- MATTHEW FORREST

AFTER 150 wins in a row, Newtown & Chilwell was staring down the barrel of a twogame losing streak after trailing Colac by six goals in the third quarter.

But the Eagles rallied in the second half, outscoring the ladder leader 33 goals to 22 to claim a 58-51 win.

Newtown & Chilwell coach Jason Woolley said a pair of changes was able to spark the second-half run.

“It was such gutsy win for our girls,” Woolley said.

“Kate Jennings moving into goal defence really gave us a lot of defensive turnovers and brought a lot of intensity. Zanna Woods also moved out of goals into wing attack because Dani Mather had a bit of a strained calf in centre, so we were forced into that a bit.

“Uneeq Palavi came into goal shooter and was quite dominant there.”

BELL PARK v SOUTH BARWON

AN 18-goal-to-nine quarter for South Barwon was the difference in an otherwise tight battle against Bell Park.

The Swans defeated the Dragons 56-45 off the back of a 43-goal performance from Ellen Doyle and a best-oncourt performance from Maddison McKiernan. South Barwon improved to 4-1.

ST ALBANS v GEELONG WEST

AFTER ending Newtown & Chilwell’s 150-win streak in round 4, St Albans was not able to repeat its heroics against Geelong West, falling to the Giants 61-39. Alahria Smith starred for the Giants while Aleisha McDonald scored 38 goals as Geelong West won every quarter in the 22-goal victory.

ST JOSEPH’S v LARA

A BEST-on-court performance from shooter Emma Buwalda helped Joeys continue its strong start to the season. Buwalda netted 33 goals and was named St Joseph’s best player as the side moved to 3-1 after defeating Lara 51-35.

ST MARY’S v GROVEDALE

ST Mary’s was too hot for Grovedale to handle, cruising to a 50-goal win on its home court. Ava Pierce, Tess Campigli and Eliza Brown led the way for the Saints causing consistent turnovers while Grace Parker was able to convert her chances, scoring 45 goals for the day.
