Shocking bottle beating

Guilty plea to drunken attack on woman

- NAOMI NEILSON

AN INTOXICATED Geelong West man beat a woman with a glass bottle and threw her through a window because she spoke to his male friend.

Bol Madeud, 42, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates Court to charges of reckless assault causing injury and unlawful assault with a weapon.

The court heard that in January 2022, an intoxicated Madeud invited a woman and a male friend to his unit in

Geelong West and became paranoid and enraged when the two began talking to each other.

After an argument in which the woman told him to “chill out”, Madeud punched the victim, fell on top of her and struck her four more times.

He then removed her wig and hit her with it.

About 5am the next day, the court heard Madeud slapped the woman across the face. When she went to leave, he threw her to the ground, climbing on top of her and grabbing a 700ml spirits bottle.

He smashed the bottle over her head, causing an immediate laceration.

The court heard he then picked up a beer bottle and a glass and hit the woman with them both, but police submitted that neither smashed.

The woman, who told police she believed she was going to die, begged him to stop, but Madeud grabbed her by the throat and squeezed tightly.

When the victim freed herself, Madeud threw her towards the window. The pane smashed over her head and a neighbour who came to inspect the commotion reported glass was visible in her wounds.

The neighbour attempted to assist the woman, but reported she felt unsafe because Madeud demanded she leave.

Madeud also faced similar assault charges for an incident in July 2019, when as accused of punching a woman to the left side of her face after becoming agitated in a Colac property.

He later moved outside and picked up a brick he threw through the back window of her car.

He also smashed her front windscreen with another brick.

His defence lawyer submitted Madeud had had a “horrific childhood” growing up in Sudan and saw both his parents shot dead.

The defence lawyer also claimed there were “serious issues” in the police brief, including whether the woman’s head or a bottle smashed the window, but Madeud ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges.
