TIP OF THE WEEK
MOST golfers have spent time being a slicer and they generally hate it and find it hard to fix.
Golfers that hook the ball will argue that hooking is a lot worse than slicing as the results are worse and the shots are more out of control.
The good news for you if you are hooker is the theory to fixing it is pretty simple, as the club face is almost certainly closed if you hook the ball.
Now if you know that you play with a closed club face then there a couple of things to check.
The easiest way to get a closed face is to have a strong grip. A strong grip is where your hands are rotated on the club away from the target.
You will see that the back of your top hand is facing towards the sky and/or the palm of your bottom hand is facing the sky.
There is a really good reason that the best players all play with a neutral grip, it makes it easier to hit the ball straight.
If you know you have a strong grip then do what you can to neutralise the way you hold the club.
The takeaway is the other area to check if you play with an uncontrollable hook.
Closing the face down as you take the club back from address is very common.
Broadly you are looking to see the toe of the club pointing towards the sky as your hands swing past hip height. If the face is pointing towards the ground then you have a closed club face and hooking is likely.
This will sound simple in theory but may not be in application so don’t hesitate to see your local professional for help if you can’t stop your hook.
