Avalon set to expand air routes

- OLIVIA SHYING

ANOTHER new flight route is expected to land at Avalon in coming months as air travel ramps up.

Airport acting chief executive Dave Crawford said the airport had experienced a “bumper April” with Easter one of the busiest periods of the year.

“We’ve seen huge demand, Easter was amazing for us,” Mr Crawford said.

Mr Crawford said the airport was hoping to soon announce a third domestic route and said new airline Bonza would be flying by the end of year.

He said interest in international flights remained strong and he was hopeful they would resume in the second half of 2022.

“It’s just great that the vibe was back – all the staff at Avalon were happy to see a good Easter.

“Easter is always our highest peak of the whole year and (now) we can forecast it and it is actually happening.”

He said this was a strong platform for the airport to build on throughout the year.

Mr Crawford said the airport was hoping to soon announce a third domestic route and said new airline Bonza would be flying by the end of year.

Bonza chief commercial officer Carley Povey said flights would be on sale soon.

“Avalon will welcome three flights each week to the Sunshine Coast and we absolutely plan to grow the number of routes over time,” Ms Povey said.

“Our best advice to travellers is to download the Fly Bonza App as this will be the best place to book for the lowest fares.”

While international flights are yet to return, Mr Crawford said interest remained strong and he was still hopeful they would resume in the second half of 2022.

“We are in discussions with numerous international airlines – specifically AirAsia,” he said.

“(International travel) is still on the plan, but the world is a little bit different now.

“We’re still hopeful it will resume by the end of this year.”
