LIGHTHOUSE SEARCH DELIVERS SWEET RELIEF

-

QUEENSCLIFFE Maritime Museum’s search for a collective noun for lighthouses has come to a close.

More than 600 possible collective noun entries were submitted to the competition, with the winner named on Thursday.

Museum spokesman Andrew Scorgie said suggestions had come from every state and territory in Australia, with entrants ranging from children to people in their 90s.

“The search is over and a collective noun for lighthouses has been chosen – a relief of lighthouses,” he said.

“Lighthouses have been a beacon of hope for mariners for centuries.

“The glimmer of light penetrating stormy skies and seas has signalled imminent safety to seafarers returning from hazardous journeys.

“Their overwhelming experience has been relief that danger has passed and that security and comfort is at hand.

“It’s been a wonderful experience and we’ve built new and stronger connections with other community and maritime organisations.”
