Grant to help at-risk local youth

- CHAD VAN ESTROP

YOUNG people at risk of recidivism and other lifelong problems will be assisted via a $388,000 grant from the Morrison government.

The Barwon Community Legal Service (BCLS), based in Belmont, will use the funds to assist at-risk youth to learn about the legal system and gain skills and experience.

Liberal senator Sarah Henderson said the Law for Life program would educate young people to secure housing, obtain a driver’s licence and address financial difficulty and family issues.

“We are investing in community-led solutions to crime, and this program will help up to 360 at-risk youth build life skills and workforce capacity over the next two years,” Senator Henderson said.

The BCLS supports communities across Greater Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and the ColacOtway council area.

The Morrison government funding for BCLS was decided before it went into its election caretaker period on April 10.
