Four to the fore in winning week for our women’s sides

-

ALL four of Geelong’s women’s State League teams celebrated Female Football Week with convincing wins.

VPLW outfit Galaxy United ran out convincing 5-1 victors over the high-flying South Yarra at Hume Reserve on Sunday night, with Kylie Olexa netting a hat-trick and captain Emily Sutcliffe bagging a brace to help Galaxy jump to third spot after five rounds.

This Sunday, Galaxy will have a chance to leapfrog into second spot when it travels to meet second-placed Boroondara Carey Eagles.

In State League 1, newly promoted North Geelong secured its second win of the season, defeating Keilor Park 2-1 at Elcho Park.

In-form winger Luisa Kump scored a double, to take her season tally to four goals from three games and help her side jump to fifth spot on the standings.

This weekend, the Warriors travel to tackle eighth-placed Bundoora United.

Lara United, meanwhile, sits atop the State 2 ladder courtesy of a hard-fought 3-2 win over Brunswick City last weekend, with coach Ryan Horrocks a relieved man after his charges came away with all three points.

“Brunswick made us work really hard for that result and going behind in a game was a foreign concept to our team this season, so it took a little bit extra to get going,” he said.

Izzy Wilkinson, Taylah Eastway and Lily Weise all scored for the league leaders.

“We’re happy to win, but we acknowledge that there’s more work to do to maintain top spot and the expectations we’ve put on ourselves early in the season,” Horrocks said, ahead of his side’s home clash this weekend against St Albans Saints.

Finally, in State League 3,

Geelong Rangers recorded its maiden win in the State League competition, thumping the hapless Kensington City 16-0.

Captain Dani Mandic netted a hat-trick, as did Annaliese Rowney and April Antony, while Felicia Johansson and Enna Bilic both scored braces, with Lily Stein and Sophie Emota completing the rout.

On Sunday, the Rangers are away to competition leaders Caroline Springs George Cross.
