TERMINAL OPPOSITION NOT ABOUT REFINERY
2050 target, although its support is somewhat lukewarm.
Geoff Foster, Cygnet “SURGE in gas plan worries”, (GA, 5/5) highlights the many voices speaking out against Viva’s proposed gas import terminal in Corio Bay, with submissions from port authorities, councils and schools among the 2000 expressing disapproval.
Geelong Football Club’s submission spoke in support of the existing fuel refinery – but the refinery operations shouldn’t be confused with the proposed new gas terminal project that is being rejected by our community.
With the Victorian government committed to cutting emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and later this year releasing its gas substitution plan, mapping the transition away from gas, it is this new gas project, with its ecological impacts, safety concerns and backward-looking approach to our energy needs that is failing to find support.
