THOMSON KEEPS NEW-LOOK BANNO AT BAY

- ROB CAMERON NETBALL

THOMSON survived a big scare from a rejuvenated Bannockburn, claiming a thrilling two-goal win on Saturday.

Thomson fought back late at Godfrey St to take out a hard-fought clash 47-45.

A new-look Bannockburn introduced Ruby Shannahan to the scoring ring with instant success, as she netted a gamehigh 30 goals.

Shannahan’s move into the attacking circle also allowed her big sister Rosie to return to the more familiar role of goal keeper, where she was also effective.

Kaylah Nicol was the player of the game in the centre for Bannockburn, constantly driving her team into attack and putting pressure on the Thomson entries.

Kierlie Shepherd stood up in defence for Thomson to be her team’s best player against the waves of early attack, and Bek Lebish also lifted her intensity as the game progressed to help turn Thomson’s fortunes around.

Thomson made the late call to introduce veteran Errin Lang (pictured) into the game and her calmness and shooting accuracy was vital in the tense last quarter.

Bannockburn coach Alana Nicol said the result was bittersweet, praising the additions to the 2022 line-up. “We were very disappointed to just fade out at the end, but the new structure is only one game in and I’m very excited about the likely improvement from more work together,” Nicol said. “Rosie and Ruby improve our strength at both ends and Kaylah has been fantastic in midcourt.

“I reckon we can start to really consistently compete with the top teams now.” WINCHELSEA went to work on its consistency within games, chalking up a 61-36 win over North Geelong. The Blues were solid for four quarters at Osborne Park, with Blues goal attack Ebony Berg taking best player honours again, with 42 goals.

EAST Geelong produced another solid defensive game to down Inverleigh by 24 goals. The Eagles starved the Hawks’ shooters of opportunities, running out 42-18 winners. CORIO put in its best performance for the season in the 68-48 win over Bell Post Hill. Molly Gribble starred in the midcourt for Corio and Caylie Murphy dropped in 54 goals. WERRIBEE Centrals enjoyed a comfortable 50-25 win over Anakie, with Jenni Rothery sinking 26 goals and Steph Kearney outstanding on her attacking wing.

LOUISE Albrighton and Angelique Ross combined to lead Belmont Lions to a big 77-25 win over Geelong West. Ross netted 54 goals, while Albrighton contributed 23.
