Grubbers get the points in Warriors arm-wrestle

- MATTHEW FORREST

THERE was little separating Modewarre and Ocean Grove throughout a “hard-fought contest” on the court, with the Grubbers scraping over the line in a thriller.

Ocean Grove led at every change but never by more than four goals, and eventually finished a 53-50 victor.

Warriors coach Courtney Trigg said it was a tough battle between two good sides.

“It was a really close, hard-fought game, there were plenty of positives to take out of that game,” Trigg said.

“It was goal for goal all the way through to the end, we kept coming back and getting to even but we couldn’t get there in the end.

“Everyone played their part well, we had a few outs with Covid and the flu that’s going around at the moment.

“A tough game like this gives us an idea where we sit, obviously it’s a pretty tight competition this year, so we’re happy to be fourth at the moment.”

Elsewhere on Saturday, Geelong Amateur took control on its home deck after a tight opening half to defeat Barwon Heads 53-36. The score was locked for much of the opening half – Ammos led 21-18 at the main break – but 31 goals to goal shooter Georgia Duncan allowed the ladder leaders to pull away for a 17-goal victory;

Queenscliff goal shooter Kaitlin Gladman piled on 37 goals to set her team up for a 50-22 win against Portarlington, with Millie O’Shea also strong for the Coutas; while a 27-16 second half saw Torquay claim a comprehensive 19-goal victory over Newcomb, 55-36.
