BARWON BATTERS WAVES

- TONCI PRUSAC

BARWON annihilated Surfside Waves 11-0 in a lopsided local derby on Saturday to cement top place on the State League 5 standings.

Only one side turned up to the clash at Shell Road Reserve and it was not the hosts, as the visitors troubled the scoreboard attendant for the first time after only nine minutes.

Patrick Skuza opened the scoring on what would turn into an embarrassing rout for the Waves, who simply had no answers.

Skuza netted his brace in stoppage time of the opening stanza, before securing his hattrick soon after the interval.

Jack Kelly, Mylton Bailey and Christian Mahon all chipped in with goals in the first half, before Alex Brzoska, George Gower, Fin Duncan, Billy Robinson and Blake Robinson added to the festivities in the second, as Barwon coach Dale Harris was left clutching at straws trying to find a weak spot in an otherwise flawless performance.

“It was great to have five debut scorers and a complete dominant performance today, but the biggest surprise was Mylton (Bailey) and Christian (Mahon) only getting a goal apiece,” Harris said.

“In all seriousness, though, I’m a very happy coach and some good football is getting played by the team.”

Harris’ stunned counterpart, Pablo Mujica, was left with nothing else but to adopt a Monty Python-like attitude and look on the “bright side of life”. “I invited Dale to the poker table, and he took the loot,” was the Surfside coach’s simple summation of the game he would rather forget.

Elsewhere in State 5, Lara United thrashed Wyndham United 7-0, while Deakin Ducks downed Maribyrnong Greens with the only goal of the game. In other State League results, Corio drew 1-1 with bottom side FC Strathmore in State 1, Rangers lost 2-0 to Moreland United in State 2, while in State 4, Surf Coast defeated Gisborne 2-1 away, Golden Plains drew 1-1 with Spring Hills, as did Bell Park with Truganina Hornets.
