Son of a gun takes aim at AFL spot

-

CARLTON coach Michael Voss has revealed his son Casey “deserved” a crack at the AFL but it wouldn’t be at Carlton via the coming mid-season draft.

The 21-year-old son of the AFL great won the Fos Williams Medal after racking up 29 disposals and 15 marks for South Australia in a four-point win over Western Australia on Sunday.

That effort came after Casey also won the club bestand-fairest for his SANFL club Sturt last season before being overlooked in national and rookie drafts.

Voss Sr revealed his son had nominated for the mid-season draft, and while Carlton had a spot to fill, the club would look elsewhere.

“I’d love to (pick him), I’d absolutely love to,” Voss Sr said on Monday.

“Unfortunately, that won’t be us. There’s a little bit too much difficulty so we might leave that one alone.”

After his best-on-ground effort, Casey said he’d had a “pretty good year” for Sturt and didn’t hide his AFL ambitions. “That’s what we all play for, to get to the highest level,” he said.

Voss Sr missed his son’s best-on-ground effort, as he was coaching the Blues to a 30point win over GWS.

But he said Casey had worked hard to push his claims and that could meet a need for an AFL club.

“I really hope he gets his chance. He certainly deserves it, he couldn’t state a stronger case over the last two years, that’s for sure,” Voss Sr told SEN.

“He’s certainly had a great couple of years and a fantastic game.

“I guess clubs will work that out if he has some relevance to them.

“If that comes to fruition, I know he’d be a pretty happy young man.”
