ELEANOR OPENS OUR EYES TO CLIMATE ACTION NEED

-

CONGRATULATIONS to eightyear-old Eleanor Noonan for her review of Rainbow the Koala: Surviving the Wild, book 1, by Remy Lai (GA Scoop, 12/5).

Eleanor reminds us of the passions of our children to preserve a world where our flora and fauna can thrive.

She tells us she “learned lots about koalas and climate change”.

While many of us find it difficult to appreciate that the climate is changing, none of us can have missed the fact that koalas, among much of Australia’s fauna and flora, are in trouble.

This year, the koala has been listed as endangered in NSW, the ACT and Queensland. Equally iconic and bleached yet again in recent weeks is the Great Barrier Reef. Both our koala population and our reef are being decimated by our rapidly changing climate and all that entails.

With a recent Australian Conservation Foundation poll highlighting that 95 per cent of Australians agree it is important to protect nature for future generations, let’s use our understanding of the plight of koalas, and the Great Barrier Reef to think big picture about the climate and how our votes can do just that – protect nature, indeed our earth, for future generations.
