Short contracts keep tip-top Parfitt on his toes

- JOSH BARNES

OUT-OF-CONTRACT Cat Brandan Parfitt is happy to continue his trend of short contract extensions as he looks to set up a new deal.

A fixture of Geelong’s midfield, Parfitt, 24, is a key re-signing for Geelong as a potential bridge to the next era of success.

Parfitt is on track for a defining year in the midfield, averaging a career-high 19.9 disposals a game.

Since being drafted at the end of 2016, Parfitt has favoured shortterm extensions, having most recently opted for a two-year deal at the end of 2020 that will expire after this season.

Given his age, Parfitt is in a prime position to push for a longterm deal, but he said he was happy “being on my toes”.

“I have always sort of kept it short,” he said.

“I enjoy not living on the edge but being on my toes and being able to play the best footy I can.

“I’m not exactly sure where we are at years wise, but I am just enjoying it (at Geelong).”

Parfitt said last month he was keen to leave talks on a new contract to one side, until he played his 100th game, which he brought up on Easter Monday against Hawthorn.

Ahead of that milestone, Cats coach Chris Scott said Parfitt was an important player for Geelong’s future.

“One hundred games makes you a pretty experienced player and he is a pretty experienced, young player and every club wants those,” Scott said.

With the milestone behind him, the hard-nut has spoken to his manager about getting moving on a new deal.

“I spoke to my manager, actually, and I am pretty happy to stay around Geelong,” he said.

“Hopefully we can get the ball rolling now.”

Other key re-signings in Geelong’s younger cohort this season include Max Holmes, Mark O’Connor and Zach Guthrie.
