A lucky escape for man in van

- OLIVIA SHYING

A TRADIE was lucky to walk away unscathed after his van flipped along the Surf Coast Highway in Torquay on Thursday.

The 25-year-old was taken to Geelong hospital for treatment, but had no obvious injuries.

Geelong highway patrol Sergeant Fletcher Pearson said police believed the van was travelling along a 100km/h stretch when the driver lost control and ran off the road before rolling.

Police are investigating whether an overloaded trailer was the cause of the collision.

A Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said firefighters responded to the crash.

“CFA was called to a ‘washaway’ as a result of an accident on the Surf Coast Highway at Torquay at 9am on Thursday,” she said.

“Firefighters confirmed no one was trapped, however Ambulance Victoria was called in to assess the patient.

“The incident was declared safe at 9.51am. CFA had two trucks on scene.”

Barwon Health said the man was discharged from hospital by noon.
