Church set for a $1m upgrade

- HARRISON TIPPET

A HERNE Hill church has unveiled its $1m renovation plans, following calls for members to pray for “increased church membership and giving”.

St Alban’s Anglican Church lodged a planning application with the City of Greater Geelong to extend and renovate the existing venue, while also formalising parking spaces.

Estimated costs of the upgrades to the Church St facility are listed as $1m.

“The project consists of an extension and renovation of existing church facilities to be used by the St Alban’s Church over a single level,” planning documents noted.

“The proposal seeks to improve the on-site amenity of the existing church premises, particularly in the areas of universal access, sanitary facilities and social spaces, in support of regular church services and community activities (playgroups).

“In addition to this, it is proposed to formally designate the former tennis court into on-site carparking, further reducing congestion and on-street parking demands.”

A church web page noted it was searching for grant opportunities to help fund the major upgrades.

“The parish council ask for prayer for increased church membership and giving in preparation for the loss of rent from the church house and interest from the Coone bequest to provide for the building project,” the website noted.

The planning application will remain open for public comment until June 8.
