Depp’s ex spills on his angry tantrums

- JUSTIN VALLEJO TIFFANY BAKKER

Johnny Depp threw a wine bottle across the room during a dispute with his friends and a male assistant who he called “pig”, according to his ex-girlfriend.

Actor Ellen Barkin testified in the star’s multimillion-dollar defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

She said the pair dated for a brief period during the filming of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in 1994, during which he was “always drinking red wine or smoking a joint”.

“He was drunk most of the time,” she said, adding, that he was often high on “marijuana, cocaine, and hallucinogenics”.

Barkin was asked if he was ever “out of control” during the five or six-month relationship.

“Yes – he once threw a wine bottle across the hotel room while we were filming Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” she said, adding that it was an argument between his friends and his assistant.

She recalled that Depp had two assistants at the time, his sister and another man whose name she couldn’t recall, but “(Depp) called him pig”.

Barkin said she couldn’t remember if the bottle was empty or full, or why he threw it, but added that it didn’t hit her or anyone else in the room.

She said their sexual relationship ended when she prepared to return home to Los Angeles against Depp’s wishes, adding that it was common for him to be “jealous and controlling” before becoming “angry and demanding”.

At the sight of a scratch on her back, Depp once got “very, very angry” and accused her of sleeping with someone else.

“There was a lot of crying, he was very jealous. He’s just a jealous man, controlling – ‘Where are you going? Who are you with? What are you doing?’ ”

The testimony of Depp’s exgirlfriend came after his exagent told the court that his increasingly “difficult” reputation meant people in Hollywood became “reluctant” to work with him, and that his “star dimmed”.

Tracey Jacobs Depp’s “unprofessional behaviour” escalated due to his increasing use of drugs and alcohol.
