DROP IN ANIMAL STRIKES

- OLIVIA SHYING

ANIMALS are continuing to be killed by trains across the V/Line network, including along the Geelong line.

New V/Line data shows 14 animal strikes have happened on the Geelong line this year, resulting in seven cancellations. In 2021, 43 animals were struck on the Geelong line.

According to the rail authority, the Geelong line is currently one of the least affected across the V/Line network by animal strikes.

The figures are significantly down on those recorded in 2018, when 400 kangaroos, almost 80 sheep, goats, cows and deer were hit by V/Line trains over 12 months.

At the time, the Geelong Advertiser reported the authority was considering using loud or high-pitched noises to scare animals from going too close to trains.

“Unfortunately, animal strikes are a major cause of disruptions on regional services. Following an incident, trains are taken out of service for repairs or deep cleaning,” a V/Line spokesman said.

“With the opening of a new bio-wash facility last year in Bendigo, in addition to our facility at South Dynon, V/Line is now able to complete that process more efficiently, minimising any flow-on impact to our passengers.”

Each time there is an animal strike, the train is removed from service and inspected for damage.

This can have a flow-on effect, as animal strikes in other parts of Victoria can result in carriage reductions on the southwest corridor.

The authority said fencing was also being constructed along known “hotspots” on the network to minimise the impact of animal strikes.
