OVERTIME HEARTBREAKER

-

A BUZZER-beating threepointer in overtime from the Pioneers’ Shakera Reilly delivered a heartbreaking 82-79 loss for the Geelong Supercats women in Mt Gambier on Friday night.

Geelong started slowly, with the Pioneers jumping out to an early 14-1 lead in the opening minutes of the game but fought back to tie the scores at three-quarter time.

Down by three points towards the end of the final quarter, Geelong’s Jessica Scannell tied the game with less than a minute to play.

But with neither team able to sink the winning basket, the game went to overtime.

The Supercats drew first blood, scoring six straight points before the Pioneers answered and went on to draw level again. With the clock winding down, the Pioneers found Reilly in the corner in the final seconds, who nailed the shot to seal the victory for the home team.

Sara Blicavs led the way for Geelong with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Aimie Rocci contributed 16 points.

The Supercats will look to return to the winners’ list when they take to the Geelong Arena court on Saturday night to face the Frankston Blues.
