Title triumph: Barwon Valley goes back to back

- MATTHEW FORREST

BARWON Valley is toasting a “next-level amazing” upset after thumping Thirteenth Beach to claim back-to-back SWGA Division 1 pennant titles.

After winning the competition for the first time in 2021, Barwon Valley cruised to victory 6-1 at Curlewis Golf Club on Sunday against a Thirteeth Beach side that had previously won eight consecutive titles.

With David Foster and Marcus Spalding standouts for Barwon Valley, captain Matt Kennedy said a revamped culture had delivered the stunning succcess.

“To beat Thirteenth Beach 6-1 is next-level amazing, because they have been on top for so long,” Kennedy said.

“The last three or four years we’ve tried to change the culture of Barwon Valley, we wanted to be a side that worked and played really well together and develop within.”

Kennedy’s team wore the underdog tag proudly in the lead-up to the final and he said it was “really special” to defend the title.

“Even though we won it last year we were coming in as underdogs, against a really fantastic side, so to come away with the win was really sensational,” he said.

“Thirteenth deserved a lot of credit, they’ve been a really quality squad, so we needed a massive upset to beat them despite having a really good squad ourselves.”
