POLL A VOTE FOR ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

-

FORMER finance minister Simon Birmingham says it is clear that climate, gender issues and equality shaped the election outcome.

With the Greens and teal independents keeping climate front and centre in their campaigns, they have achieved remarkable success.

After the black summer bushfires and the floods it is not surprising that the Australian people had no appetite to support the watery climate commitments of the Coalition (a scientifically inadequate net zero by 2050 emissions target) or even the somewhat more ambitious Labor targets, which were not a focus of Labor’s campaign.

With clear success for Greens and teal independents, voters have shown their support for a government that better represents the climate concerns that polling shows matter to most Australians.
