BRAVE THE COLD IN SLEEPOUT FOR CAUSE

- ABBY PARDEW

CARING Geelong community members will shiver through a cold winter night when the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies Victoria) Sleepout returns to the region for the first time in two years.

Participants will sleep outside at Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus on August 19 to help raise funds for and awareness of people in the local region experiencing homelessness and poverty.

St Vincent de Paul Society regional council president and local Vinnies volunteer Peter Cummins is excited to have the sleepout back in Geelong.

“Every cent raised will be backing our local, volunteer-run community services that provide people with the basic things people need to survive – food, school fees, transport, clothing, furniture, and much more,” Mr Cummins said.

According to the City of Greater Geelong, around 4500 people access homelessness services in Geelong each year.

Participants will need to bring sleeping bags and pillows and are encouraged to dress very warmly as it will be cold and possibly wet. For more details and to register for the event, go to: fundraiseforvinniesvic.org.au/ geelongcommunitysleepout/
