Drug-crazed violent spree

Brother of Mr Universe in court

- NAOMI NEILSON

THE Geelong bodybuilder brother of three-time Mr Universe Calum von Moger trashed his parents’ house during a drug-induced psychosis, a court has heard.

Edward von Moger, 32, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday to unlawfully causing criminal damage at a Torquay house in May this year.

The court heard Edward von Moger returned to his parents’ house after an appointment for his mental health that had made him “upset”.

He then ate magic mushrooms that were growing in the backyard.

The court heard he was in a “heightened” state when he locked himself in a bathroom and began yelling and smashing items, including destroying the shower using the shower head.

He emerged in a “manic state” and smashed a bedroom window and a living room window.

The court heard von Moger picked up a golf club and smashed ornaments around the house during the spree, which caused $16,373.67 of damage.

He also approached his wheelchairbound father, grabbed the footrest and tipped the chair over, but stopped just before his father could fall out.

When police arrived, von Moger broke off an antenna from their car that he used to hit the window.

He was told to back away, but was eventually handcuffed and taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

Calum von Moger, who played Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 2018 movie Bigger, had surgery after a May incident at his Geelong home in which windows were smashed.

He also suffered significant injuries after leaping off a second-floor balcony.

Magistrate John Bentley said a restitution order for Edward von Moger “troubles” him because “it’s his parents”, but was told the RACV insurance company would not cover repair costs because the damage was done by a household member.

Mr Bentley asked that von Moger be assessed for a court-integrated services program, which provides treatment for accused people, and indicated it would likely cover him for five months.

“You need some help,” Mr Bentley told von Moger.
