Belmont Lions v Corio

Belmont Lions have proven last week’s scalp ofthe premiers was no accident, backing it up with a 11-point win to start the year unbeaten.

Little separated Belmont and Corio all day, with less than a goal between the two sides in the first half before scores were level at threequarter time.

But it was the Lions who loaded up in the final quarter to eke out the 16.15 (111) to 15.10 (100) win, though their 6.6 fourth quarter helping meant some chances were undoubtedly left on the park.

But it was their multiplepronged attack that threatened, with five players kicking two goals or more, while Corio recruit Herschelle

Carr had a day out for the Devils with six.

Bell Post Hill v Inverleigh

Reigning premier Inverleigh made sure to put its round 1 loss to bed, a blistering first quarter performance against Bell Post Hill and the return of a premiership Hawk the cornerstones of their 14.11 (95) to 9.6 (60) win.

Adam Donohue, who missed the season-opener, returned with a bang for Inverleigh, kicking eight goals.

The Hawks kicked seven first-term goals to the Panthers’ two and led by three goals at the final change.

North Geelong v Anakie

North Geelong celebrated its first win under Cats great

Peter Riccardi, 10.12 (72) to 9.6 (60) against Anakie

Less clinical in the opening

quarter compared to the Roos, the Magpies managed 2.4 to 3.0 at Osborne Park to trail by two before a dominant second outing turned the tide.

Four of the Magpies’ best were new recruits, Patrick Cleary and Harry Cornelius (North Shore), Rory Desnoy (Leopold) and Noah Billy (Newtown & Chilwell) all showing their value.

GW Giants v Werribee Centrals

Werribee Centrals started life on the road in winning fashion, a gritty 9.10 (64) to 8.5 (53) win over GW Giants following a similar performance against Corio a week earlier.

The Centurions, who played their first four games away, had the edge over the Giants all day, though a wasteful 1.5 second quarter will be an area for improvement for Rhyce Prismall’s side.

Recruit Kur Kur has enjoyed a strong start in the GDFL, with

a second three-goal haul in as many weeks to be the Centurions’ leading goalkicker, while Giants recruit Ako Warakea – who comes from the club’s GFL program – was named his side’s best.

Winchelsea v Bannockburn

A clinical start and finish in its 9.12 (66) to 8.9 (57) twilight win at Winchelsea sees Bannockburn finish the round on top of the ladder.

The unbeaten Tigers came out firing against the Blues to lead by 28 points at the first change, before the home side pegged it back to level scores by three-quarter time.

But it was Ron Pilgrim’s side who took their chances in the last, their 2.1 the knockout after the Blues managed a woeful 0.4.

Geelong Falcons duo James Hose and Ryan Perkins were among Bannockburn’s best, while forward Tom Moloney kicked five for the Blues.

BFNL Barwon Heads v Newcomb

Barwon Heads has recorded its first win for the season, a 36-point victory over an inaccurate Newcomb at Howard Harmer Oval.

Cooper Ward bagged five majors and Archie Hildebrandt three as the Seagulls consistently applied scoreboard pressure, winning 17.10 (112) to 10.16 (76).

The Power had plenty of chances to build a quartertime break but would score just 1.7 in the opening term.

Geelong Amateur v Portarlington

The Demons’ dream start to the BFNL season has come to a swift end with a 99-point defeat at the hands of the Ammos at Queens Park Reserve.

Eighteen goals to just five after quarter-time set up the victory with gun recruit Patrick Dowling slotting five while

young Tom Gorell bagged four – taking his season tally to 10 – as Geelong Amateur won 21.16 (142) to 6.7 (43).

Torquay v Ocean Grove

The reigning premiers have continued their strong start to the BFNL season with a 58point victory over the Grubbers at McCartney Oval.

Young gun Patrick Hughes slotted six and star recruit Matt Boag three as the Tigers kept the 0-3 Ocean Grove to just nine points by halftime.

Modewarre v Queenscliff

Modewarre has banked the four points for the first time this season under new coach Mark Hovey with a 22-point win over Queenscliff at Mount Moriac Reserve.

The Warriors would boot 7.3 to just 2.3 in the final term to run away with the match as Connor Joseph bagged three goals. It was the Coutas’ first loss for the season, going down 11.16 (82) to 8.12 (60).
