Urgent plea for blood donors
Geelong’s Lifeblood Donor Centre is seeking people to give blood and plasma amid a major shortage.
In Geelong, 100 local people are needed to give blood and plasma every day, seven days a week.
Lifeblood spokeswoman Stephanie Reynolds said the focus was healthcare worker donations, as they understood the lifechanging benefits of donated blood, amid the Health Services Blood Drive.
“People with cancer or blood disorders, trauma victims, surgery patients and women in childbirth are among those who require blood every day,” she said.
“That’s why we are incredibly grateful for every donation.”
Ms Reynolds said each donation could save up to three lives.
“You never know when a donation may make a lifesaving difference to you or someone you love.”
Insurance company GMHBA is supporting the cause, with a group of local employees giving blood to support the annual drive.
Chief executive David Greig said the organisation was proud to support staff to make a meaningful difference.
“Working in health services, we unfortunately hear too often about people who need blood products to survive, whether it’s in an emergency situation or to support ongoing care for chronic health conditions,” he said.
From April 1 to June 30, Lifeblood’s Health Services Blood Drive will unite health services across the country, with a goal of more than 10,520 donations.
Healthcare workers who participate will receive a limited-edition bandage designed by Melbourne artist, Lisa Gorman.
