Family success fires Geelong junior cricket awards

- Ben Cameron

Bragging rights are up for grabs in one local household this week with two brothers winning bowling awards at Geelong junior cricket’s night of nights.

Fergus and Charlie Allender won the under-17 bowling average and under-13 bowling aggregate and average, respectively this week.

Right armer Charlie, who has some serious pace for his age, claimed 14 wickets during the season at an average of 8.5 while older brother Fergus, a left-arm quick, had a leaguebest average of 10.4 in the competition two year levels above.

In the same under-17 competition, Charlie Peake, the younger brother of under-19 Australian representative Oliver Peake, won the bowling aggregate with 13 wickets for South Barwon.

Proud father Steve Allender said it had been a terrific effort from his younger son as it was his first year leading the attack for the Seagulls, while Fergus played in a division one premiership.

“He learned a lot across the course of the year,” Steve said of Charlie. “For Fergus he had set his sights on improving his cricket and has worked hard to achieve the gains that the awards represent.

“It is great to have them both do well for Barwon Heads, where their grandfather, John Claringbold is a life member and multiple premiership player.”

Steve said his boys began playing the game on the beach and in the backyard, learning how to handle the pressures that cricket can bring and riding the highs and lows of “what can be a fickle sport”.

“They are lucky to be at a very strong club with great junior coaches at the club and across the region who place the an emphasis on team achievement and looking after your mates,” he said.

In what was an unusual result on the night, Queenscliff’s

Jordan Monahan and Geelong City’s Declan Mugavin both won the under-17 batting aggregate, tying with 403 runs for the season. However, Mugavin had the leading average for the competition with 80.6.

The best average of the season across all competitions went to Barwon Heads’ Tom Mackie, who finished with a spectacular 320 in the under-13s, closely followed by Geelong City’s William Fenwick

with 316. Under-13 Alexander Thomson batter James Whitworth was the most prolific across all divisions with 413 runs while Murgheboluc’s Xavier Lindsay led all comers with the ball, taking 27 wickets at a tidy average of 6.67 in the under-17s.
