Mixed results in a tough weekend for United

After two losses to Sandringha­m at home on Saturday, Geelong United’s men and women were able to split the double header round with two wins against Ringwood on the road on Sunday.

It was a close contest between United’s women and the Sandringha­m Sabre on Saturday, the visitors drawing first blood to be up by four at quarter time. However, with Geelong holding a four-point lead by the final break, the fourth term saw the teams go almost shot for shot before the Sabres got home 71-63.

Shaneice Swain led the scoring for Geelong with 19 points, Jada Rice notching another double double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Sunday’s game was another close affair, with scores level at three quarter time, but a 30-point final quarter saw United secure a comfortabl­e 81-64 victory.

Swain recorded a double double with 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Lasha Petree added 22. United’s men were outclassed by the sharp shooting Sabres on Saturday night, with Tanner Krebs producing 21 of the team’s 24 points in the first quarter. Geelong were able to cut the margin to eight points in the fourth quarter with minutes remaining but were unable to capitalise on the momentum.

Ma’alo Hicks worked hard in the post for United, leading the scoring with 18 to go with 11 rebounds and four assists.

It was a closer contest on Sunday afternoon, with

Demarcus Gatlin top scoring with 21 in a 84-81 victory. While Ringwood led for much of the match, United stayed with them and made their run in the final quarter.

With scores level with 37 seconds left, a three-point shot from Geelong’s Latrell Jones stole the lead with two seconds to go.
