Golf tips at arm’s length

- Steve Brodie

I have written before that the direction of your shots is all about the orientation of the club face and your ability to return it to a square position at impact.

Sounds easy. But as you all know it isn’t and the club face can be affected by other things in your golf swing.

The way your torso rotates is a big influence on the swing of the golf club.

The reason it is such an influence is your arms are attached to your shoulders and if your shoulders, which are attached to your torso, don’t turn at the correct angle then your arms will not be able to function properly.

And so it goes ... if your arms don’t function properly then the golf club can’t present to the ball in the correct position and the finale is the club head cannot arrive to the ball consistently.

The orientation of your shoulder and torso rotation are often hard to reconcile because you typically won’t be seeing yourself swing. You will be relying on what you are feeling and unfortunately some of the time you can’t trust what you are feeling.

Correct rotation in the upper half of your body will look like you are just rotating around the spine angle that you set at address. Again, this sounds simple, but if it doesn’t rotate properly and your spine angle doesn’t hold its position then you will have very inconsistent shot patterns.

If you know or even suspect you have what I have just described in your golf swing then go and see your local professional for help.
