Tribute to HMS Sydney serviceman

Geraldton Guardian - - REMEMBRANCE DAY - Adam Poulsen

An intimate crowd gathered at the Geraldton War Cemetery yesterday for a symbolic memorial service to the only serviceman whose body was recovered from the wartime ship HMAS Sydney II.

Special guest Alf Thornton, a HMAS Sydney II crew member fortunate enough not to have been aboard the day it sank, was among those who laid wreaths on the grave of the unknown serviceman.

Speakers included Australian Defence Force chaplain Garry Hamersley, Geraldton RSL president Steve Butler, and City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn.

Mr Thornton said he was impressed by Geraldton’s HMAS Sydney II Memorial, which he visited earlier in the day.
