-

On July 25 Seoul Tourism Organization announced its selection of four autonomous Seoul districts in the 2023 Seoul Theme Tourism County Contest. This month-long contest sought to both uncover the hidden gems of Seoul and reflect the ever-changing trends in international and domestic travel, encouraging travelers to venture beyond the well-known tourist areas of Seoul. In showcasing the unique charm and culture of each district, the contest also highlights the enriching tourism experience still found in Seoul today. During the contest, 25 districts from across Seoul proved just how rich their cultures are. The contest’s judging panel analyzed what makes each district truly unique, from natural environments to history to food. The thorough judging process was nothing short of competitive, with judges evaluating each district on originality, feasibility and long-term tourism goals and content. “We conducted the Theme Tourism Contest with the intention of promoting attractive content for each of the 25 autonomous districts, aiming to take the lead in the global tourism market,” said Gil Ki-yeon, CEO, Seoul Tourism Organization. “We will discover and actively utilize theme tourism resources that highlight the characteristics of each autonomous district, expanding Seoul’s spectrum of attractions and contributing to balanced regional tourism development.” Which four districts emerged as the hidden jewels of the country? Gangam-gu, Gangbuk-gu, Songpa-gu and Jung-gu topped the list. Shall we explore them together?

GANGNAM-GU

In the theme of K-culture, Gangnamgu’s UNEEG (You N Every Experience in Gangnam) Tours offer small-group immersive experiences. Every week visitors can discover diverse, themed content in the district (with subjects such as culture, relaxation, history and trends) through these tours.

GANGBUK-GU

Gangbuk-gu seeks to become the base camp for K-mountain tourism and reconnect its guest to nature, adventure and health-conscious delights. Utilizing natural resources from the mountains and building on the legacy of hanryang — knowing how to find, enjoy and care for oneself — this district seeks to create a place where visitors can immerse themselves in culture, art and adventure.

SONGPA-GU

The Songpa-gu district’s Citycation County project combines city and vacation aesthetics and experiences to embrace the concept of “healing in the city.” The district also plans to expand its cultural and arts programs for a yearround, urban leisure feel. Seokchon Lake, Seoul’s sole natural lake, will host a series of events and exhibits throughout the coming months. Known for its springtime blossoms and colorful fall foliage, the lake offers up natural beauty as well as cultural richness.

JUNG-GU

For a street festival, head to Jung-gu’s 2023 Myeong-dong Beer Festival This highly anticipated event collaborates with various street food outlets and distinctive Korean craft beers for an unforgettable experience. The event also helps small- and medium-sized food businesses in the district grow and share their food with more people.
