AROUND THE TRAPS
THE PGA Tour has confirmed Royal Melbourne Golf Club will host the Presidents Cup for the third time in 25 years when the tournament returns in 2019.
No other international venue has had the honour of hosting the biennial event more than once, but Royal Melbourne has already provided its tremendous layout for the event in 1998 and 2011.
“We’re thrilled to once again be returning to the prestigious and storied Royal Melbourne Golf Club,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Our history there speaks volumes about not only the course and its ability to host world-class competitions, but also the surrounding area in Melbourne as a destination for our fans and players. The Sandbelt course, designed by the legendary Alister Mackenzie, will see the best international players – minus Europe – take on the might of America, who has lifted the cup in nine of the 11 events.
“Royal Melbourne is delighted to be chosen to host the 2019 Presidents Cup,” Royal Melbourne Captain David Thomas said.
“It is a prestigious international tournament featuring many of the very best golfers in the world. Our club looks forwards to some excellent golf being played by both teams on our renowned Composite Course.”
