Shopping in a DOC hut
Edmund Hillary Clothing has opened its first flagship store in Auckland’s newest precinct Commercial Bay. Inspired by one of Sir Edmund Hillary’s beloved
DOC huts, but with a modern look, the store fit-out includes recycled and upcycled materials and fittings, including repurposed
New Zealand native wood, and a telegraph post repurposed into a seat. Antique ice picks and original 1953 images from the historic first ascent of Mt Everest adorn the walls. “He loved our mountain huts and the mountain hut tradition,” says son Peter Hillary.
“Many of his favourite huts no longer exist anymore, like De la Beche Hut (in Mt
Cook), while many of his other favourite huts are rarely used like Haast Hut.” A portion of all sales is donated to Sir Ed’s charity work in Nepal as well as outdoor initiatives in New Zealand, UK and Nepal.
