If you’ve ever stared at your wardrobe and declared, “I’ve got nothing to wear!” you are not alone. And as we shift into the festive season, wardrobe angst can be a thing.

However, when we step back to identify what triggers these thoughts, it can be liberating to realise it comes down to social conditioning.

After all, who said you need to wear a different outfit at every social gathering and on the gram? Well the good news is that this mindset is changing.

“Wear the same dress at multiple Christmas parties as a badge of honour,” says Maggie Marilyn designer Maggie Hewitt. “If someone sees you wearing the same thing, that’s cool. Or if they notice your outfit has been repaired with a little darned hole.”

And don’t worry about buying a new dress for Christmas day. “Just pick something you already have in your wardrobe and let it be about spending time with loved ones,” she says. “That may sound like a conflicting message as we obviously sell clothing. At Maggie Marilyn we always try to encourage our customers to shop with intention. Shop because you love it and can imagine yourself wearing something on numerous occasions.”

Christmas is a favourite time of year for Hewitt, who has recently become an aunty, and she is looking forward to spending time with family.

“I’m such a family-oriented person. It feels like it is the one time of year where we can all give each other that undivided attention and there’s no distractions. Where the inbox slows and everyone is taking a break,” she says. “I also love that we have summer Christmases. I love being at the beach, having barbecues. I love drinking Champagne at 9am, having a nap at 2pm, and swimming in the ocean… there’s something about me and the sea. It really pulls my soul in.”

Hewitt will be spending Christmas at Somewhere, her parents’ home in the Bay of Islands.

It’s such a special place in Hewitt’s heart that Somewhere is also the name of her traceable essentials line.

“We always spend Christmas at Somewhere. I breathe a sigh of relief every time I get there,” she says.
