Ode to insects

The multidimensional importance of insects.

- Words Justine Jamieson

Have you ever thought about how incredible insects are? They play a critical role in the Earth’s ecosystem, keep our planet alive for us as we continue to destroy it and yet many fear their tiny existence and squash them! If you take time to marvel in their exquisite beauty, you will see they have the most unearthly sci-fi-like features and the cutest fluffy faces and feet. They also have some amazing, unique behaviours – ants respect their dead by carrying them home to a cemetery outside their nest, a job for the colony’s ‘undertakers’. And some women love to hear how the praying mantis bites the head off their male lover after sex – saves worrying whether they’ll commit long-term after all?!

Egyptians and Greeks were some of the first entomologists; drawing and even mummifying some species. They found certain insects sacred and believed they were omens of what is to come as well as protectors and symbolic of certain deities’ presence.

Some energy sensitives believe insects hold meaning, the symbology of which can come in the way of dreams, recurring imagery and the physical insect itself.

I’ve written here about my intuitive feelings and experience of insect symbols, some of their ancient history, and some questions to ask yourself when you see these tiny divine messengers.
