Forgotten World Adventures

-

The decommissioned railway line from Taumarunui to Stratford passes through spectacular countryside along the Forgotten World Highway.

Eleven years ago farmer Ian Balme had the idea to put adapted golf carts onto the rails and Forgotten World Adventures was born.

The self-drive carts operate by simple push peddle and the speed they can go is limited so that you comfortably chug along the track at ease and enjoy the scenery.

To add to the adventure you pass through several tunnels. The longest is 1.5km, took six years to dig and starts on an S-bend. Stop in the middle of the tunnel and switch off your cart for a moment – it’s so dark you can’t even see your hand in front of you.

There are several tour options available including a two-day trip from Taumarunui through to Stratford with an overnight stay in Whangamomona, or return day trips. It’s a unique, fun and wonderful way to see a remote and beautiful part of the country.

Forgotten World Tours also runs jet boat tours on the Whanganui River. forgottenworldadventures.co.nz
