Card #9 Write now! Start a journal
We define ourselves through stories, the ones we hear and the ones we tell ourselves. Having a regular habit of self-reflection through journaling is a powerful way to find our own unique voice. Make a 10 minute writing date with yourself each day for three weeks; first thing in the morning, last thing at night or over your lunch break. Using the same time each day creates a rhythm and helps the inner artist avoid procrastinating. It can be done in a stream-of-consciousness style where you let whatever thoughts are running through your head pour out across the page uncensored: ’blah blah blah what a waste of time...’ write quickly without worrying about punctuation or spelling and resist the urge to read it afterwards. Make the habit stick by using your favourite pens, maybe in different colours, and choose a nice notebook. Just begin. If you prefer a little structure to the process, start with one thing you are grateful for each day. There are no rules.
Y? Writing allows our feelings to be expressed through words. It can help us decompress from the rigours of the day, gain perspective on its happenings, and organise our thoughts. For more insights into the creative power of regular journaling, look up Julia Cameron and her book The Artist’s Way.
