01 2016 Julicher 99 Rows Pinot Noir, $27

Julicher Estate in Martinborough has new owners, Brad and Warren Butterworth, who are expanding their vineyard plantings, predominantly in pinot noir, and will make more exceptional wines such as this one, which drinks superlatively right now. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered so there’s a lot of earthy richness to enjoy.

02 2017 Nor’ Wester Pinot Noir, $27

This cheeky little pinot comes from Greystone Wines and is named after the dry wind that blows through North Canterbury’s vineyards, causing the grapes to develop thicker skins than pinot is usually known for, which can add structural interest to the wines. This one was fermented in small batches with 10 months maturation in French oak.

03 2017 Deliverance Pinot Noir, $26

Muddy Water Winery is one of the best producers of pinot noir in North Canterbury and this accessibly priced drop is the gateway to its high-quality range of wines. It's a blend of pinot noir grapes grown in the region and reflects the hot, dry and long summers with their cool nights, which preserve freshness in the wines.

04 2018 Main Divide Pinot Noir, $27

Another North Canterbury specialty, this time from Pegasus Bay Wines, which was founded by the Donaldson family. The Donaldsons are pioneers of great pinot noir and an impressive range of whites that consistently provide great drinking, thanks to the deliciousness, power and longevity of the wines. Main Divide is a must try for pinot devotees.
