Good

The beauty issue

- Carolyn Enting, editor

Welcome to Good’s summer issue, which we’ve filled with beautiful things to fill up your cup as well as get you thinking. Our “Beautiful Things” wordfind will have you searching for sunrises and rainbows, while our gardening pages share how to plant a butterfly-friendly garden.

Read about how to feel beautiful in 2022 and consider joining Gen Z’s self-accepting beauty revolution if you haven’t already!

Our ethical beauty guide also rounds up the latest trends in skincare to help you choose for your skin and the planet, and our interviews with beauty industry heavyweights who are leading the way globally in sustainable skincare from New Zealand (pages 32 to 37) are super inspiring.

Currently a whopping 120 billion units of waste are produced every year by the beauty industry and these Kiwi women are tackling this horrifying statistic with innovative solutions. And the good news is the global industry is taking notice.

Jane Goodall recently endorsed Emma Lewisham’s circular, waste-free carbon-positive business model and “urges all brands to follow their lead”.

Lewisham is sharing her Sustainability IP with the industry, which Goodall acknowledges “is a powerful step”.

“This is when true change begins – when we all work together… the greatest danger to our future is apathy,” says Goodall.

We can do our bit by supporting brands who are doing the right thing and as these New Zealand trailblazers are proving, we don’t need to compromise on the quality of the product to make a better choice for the Earth.

One that I’m very excited about is Aleph Beauty’s new mascara which is refillable and recyclable! See page 80.

Our cover star Matilda Green’s down-to-earth approach to beauty is also positively refreshing for a Gen Xer like me, too.

Shooting this cover story over lockdown meant Matilda had to do her own hair and make-up for our socially distanced shoot, and she wasn’t able to get to the hairdresser to touch up her regrowth. She took it all in her stride and is embracing her natural colour coming through.

Matilda shares some learnings about letting go of façades as well as some ace beauty hacks and DIY recipes to try on pages 16 to 25.

She likes to get a bit of sun too, and that is certainly something we are all looking forward to this holiday season.

If you’re looking for some inspo for great day trips around the country over summer, check out our travel guide on pages 98-102.

I’m personally looking forward to reconnecting with loved ones, and lots of sea swims.

Happy holidays! carolyn@good.net.nz
